Coastal flooding and protection in Somerset

There were 140 people from 25 schools and colleges in attendance for talks at the first GA meeting of the year. Two talks were presented: ‘Geography at University’ and ‘Coastal systems and management in Somerset’.

Dr. Chris Spencer had top-billing and gave a well-crafted talk that dealt with coastal settings from a systems point of view. He revealed something of the complex and dynamic nature of the problem, with some useful evidence from the vulnerable Somerset coast. Coastal flood modelling, hazards and risk, dune conservation, erosional and depositional processes were illustrated for a region that has a wide range of settings; solid defence, sandy beaches, salt marshes and mudflats.
