Catching up with posts, post-summer: #2 Sheila Jones Fund

Sheila Jones awarded Honorary Life Membership of the Bristol Branch of the Geographical Association in 2008
#2 A successful bid to Sheila Jones Fund for networking support

Sheila Jones was instrumental in the success of our Bristol Branch (and the national GA) for many years. Bristol was where most of her geography was done, as a pupil (Redland High School for Girls), university student (University of Bristol), teaching (Colston Girls’ School). She was involved at all levels in the Bristol Branch over the course of over 40 years and made Honorary Life Member in 2008. See further biographical details in Alan Parkinson’s (GA President 2021-22) “GAPresidents blogspot”

From the minutes of the Bristol Branch of the Geographical Association Committee Meeting 7 pm Friday March 6th 1959.
The meeting recommended that Mr Bell, Miss Sheila Jones, Miss Fleetham and Miss Cleverley be co-opted to the Committee.

We are extremely pleased to report that even more effort was devoted to maintaining a healthy programme of events and expanding our reach in 2023-24. This we did in Sheila’s name, and here acknowledge both her inspirational geographical legacy and also the financial legacy we have been able to draw upon from the GA after providing evidence of our efforts..

Participants at each of our lectures and teacher-support events were reminded of Sheila’s strong belief that the maintenance of rich programmes by local Branches was key to the success of the subject. This can only be achieved by the efforts of motivated committees and willing speakers, so networking is a central element.

We have offered a diverse programme of lectures from across the curriculum and attracted perhaps 150 sixth-formers in the past year. Our Worldwise Quiz for Y10-11s attracted 17 teams. Teacher-support events covered GIS, diversity and inclusion in the classroom, and an evening urban regeneration walk and talk.

Plans for next year are being cemented as I write, and we may even see some new members on the committee. We are confident that a healthy programme can be maintained and there are sufficient funds to further encourage activity and engagement.
